"Discovering" Global Blindness

My first exposure to ophthalmology in the developing world came as a short-term, visiting ophthalmic consultant to a rural mission hospital in Kenya in 1998. That experience led me to return to Kenya for almost 2 years from 2000 to 2001. 

During that time, I was exposed to some of the basic facts and concepts of community eye health, such as the staggering number of people blind from cataracts and other causes. My heart and mind were opened as I had "discovered" the massive challenge of eliminating avoidable global blindness.
